Subscribe to my free weekly content round-up newsletter, God Rolls. Maybe not even Beyond Light? But it’s a long road ahead in this live game, so we’ll see what else is on deck going forward.įollow me on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. And no, it just doesn’t live up to Witch Queen. This felt like it was supposed to be a big, disastrous moment (LightFALL!) and it just didn’t land with any weight.Īgain, it’s day one, but given that the bulk of at least the campaign has been experienced, we can at least judge most of that. I had to read in a single line of text something about how Ghosts felt their connection to the Traveler severed, even though we and they still have the light, which makes no sense because when Ghaul even contained the Traveler, we lost our light for a long while. The Veil – What on earth is the Veil!? How do we spend the entire campaign trying to find the Veil and protect the Veil and by the end of the campaign we’re now in a “huh well I guess we gotta keep trying to figure out what the Veil is” storyline? That should have been the finale of the campaign! Instead all we get are vague clues about the Black Heart and the concept that The Witness did something with the Veil which…killed the Traveler? The whole “Traveler is dead” finale was bizarre, as the NPCs started talking like it was dead, when all we saw was The Witness cutting open some portal into it (its pale heart holds the key, I imagine?). Third, it was just far too easy to see Rohan’s death coming, which I figured would happen just from the trailers alone.

Second, having Calus as a villain with his very pointless and obvious motivations (power! wealth!) was a far cry from the complexities and trickery of Savathun. First, having ultra-cranky Osiris be the lead NPC the entire time felt exhausting. Lightfall Story – We’ll get into campaign spoilers here now, inevitably, but Lightfall’s storyline compares pretty unfavorably to Witch Queen, and zooming out on the whole thing, I really didn’t like what they did here for a few reasons.

I agree simplifying mods was a good call, and I love changes like element neutral armor, but I am not sold on armor charge and the new subclass “sprite” things being a good replacement to the much more fun builds I was just using a week ago. I was genuinely really, really enjoying elemental well-based builds, and this just feels like a heavily neutered version of that, trying to track down tiny little orbs to activate armor charge abilities that are not as strong or interesting. From a design perspective I love the visuals, but this idea we had about zipping around on rooftops with Strand just doesn’t really exist because of the aforementioned cooldowns, and it feels pretty sprawling and empty a lot of the time, especially the one zone with a public event that essentially deletes every other enemy from the entire play space except for that one targeted area where it’s spawning things in.Īrmor Charge – My initial impression of this system is…I don’t like it. Neomuna As A Play Space – It’s a little weird. I think aspects of Strand are fun, threadlings, tangles, suspension, but the grapple/grenade/melee cooldowns feel oppressively terrible. The cooldown is baseline what, a minute, two minutes? And you can get it down the 30 seconds maybe? It feels bad, and so do the triple melee charges which fill so slowly on all classes you’ll barely even have one. Now, the grapple cooldown is so long it barely feels like a traversal tool at all, counter to pretty much every game that’s ever had some sort of grappling hook in it. Gone are those ultra-fast cooldowns that made tougher campaign segments still pretty hard, even with those.

Strand (Live Game Version) – Once you exit the campaign, Strand starts to really feel like a burden. Loads of grapplers and melee charges made it seem like it was going to be really fun, and it has a lot of potentially based on the glimpse the campaign gives you. Strand (Campaign Version) – I was really excited for the prospect of Strand during the points in the campaign where you are “empowered” by it.
